What is Warren College Television?

Warren College Television (WCTV) was the first student television station on UCSD's closed circuit cable television system, Triton Cable Network.

WCTV is owned and managed by the Warren College Residential Life Office and is operated by the Warren Television Production Group under the guidance of the WCTV director of operations who is the UCSD/Warren Residential Life staff advisor.

Established in the Fall of 1993, WCTV began as a means by which Warren College could keep its residents informed of campus events and as a way of promoting interest in college activities among Warren residents.  WCTV produces a variety of community-oriented programs and encourages students of all majors to participate in aspects of television production and station management.

Programs are schedule Monday through Thursday 6:00pm-1:00am and during the weekends.  The remaining timeslots are filled by computer generated informational slides (CG pages).

Students at WCTV develop program content and have access to a production studio, editing facilities, cameras, videos, materials, staff assistance, and a diverse audience for their projects.

What does Warren College Television produce?

Since most of WCTV's programming is student initiated, any quarter's productions depend on the interest of the WCTV members.

WCTV's regularly scheduled shows have included live talk shows, campus news broadcasts, coverage of college events, cooking programs, and situation comedies.

WCTV also produces public service announcements, commercials, and special productions for other UCSD departments.

What can I do at Warren College Television?

You can get involved in any or all aspects of television production and station management.

Be a producer, editor, writer, light grip, camera-person, director, actor, assist with station and programming marketing and advertisement, help produce the quarterly TV guide.

No experience?  No problem!  Students of all levels of experience are members of WCTV.  WCTV is a teaching station and offers members workshops and hands on experience that will give you the skills and confidence to take on different roles at WCTV.

What channel is Warren College Television on?

Warren residents can watch WCTV 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on channel 20 on UCSD Triton Cable Network.

Residents at other colleges can also see WCTV at certain hours on channel 19.  Channel 19 is a shared college channel which rotates between all the college television stations.  Hour blocks of time are dedicated to specific stations from 6:00pm-1:00am.  During the morning hours channel 19 rotates approximately every 12 minutes between each station.

WCTV's regular schedule airs during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.  During the summer WCTV airs a modified schedule of programming.

Where is Warren College Television located?

WCTV is located in the Warren Student Activity Center.  The WCTV offices include a studio and an edit suite/control booth.  It is within these two rooms that most of WCTV programs are made.

The studio is equipped with three video cameras, a teleprompting monitor, and a viewing monitor.  Two phone lines are also available for use during live broadcasts for viewer calls.

The edit/control room serves three purposes: acting as an edit suite, a studio control room, and the station broadcast center.

The edit/control center allows WCTV to view the input of the studio as well as that of the editing decks.  Using a Panasonic WJ-MX50 video effects generator, one can switch between live camera feeds and pre-taped segments.  The final product is then recorded on a master tape.  This set up also allows WCTV to broadcast live in studio programs.  The editing system is presently capable of editing all formats of tapes except digital to a VHS or SVHS format.

WCTV is capable of airing programming in mini-DV, Hi-8, 3/4", VHS, or SVHS format.  The WCTV broadcast area consists of two SVHS decks, a PC running Windows XP (for computer generated info pages and teleprompting), a Macintosh computer G-4 (for video editing), 5 disk CD changer, and a Panasonic WJ-MX30 video mixer for controlling on air video and audio outputs.

Editing is done through the G-4 using Final-Cut Pro or iMovie.  Future plans include the purchase of After-Effects 5.5, Photoshop, and Pinnacle Edition DV.

How can I get involved with Warren College Television?

It's easy, WCTV has meetings on Wednesdays at 7:00pm (as of spring quarter '04) at the Warren Student Activity Center (SAC) and everyone is invited to attend.

If you can't make the meeting time, you can contact WCTV's director of operations, Chrystal Basil, at the Warren Residential Life office or the station manager, Matthew Bielich.
